The World Turned Upside Down

When the Redcoats walked off the field after losing the Revolutionary War to George Washington's Yankees, the British army played a tune called  "The World Turn'd Upside Down".

That song title conveys the cognitive dissonance I have been experiencing since reading this shocking headline:

Pirates Agree To Terms With Russell Martin

The Pirates?

Cognitive dissonance is defined as:

"The feeling of discomfort when simultaneously holding two or more conflicting cognitions: ideas, beliefs, values or emotional reactions."

The conflicting ideas in this case are:
  • The Yankee championship brand, first defined by Jacob Ruppert, and carried on by owners such as George Steinbrenner; and
  • Hal Steinrenner cheapness. For example: "Martin said the Yankees told him they did not have the money to meet his contract demands."
